New radon maps show where radon levels are highest

New radon maps from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection show where radon exposure is highest in Germany and where protective measures are needed. Because as we already know, radon gas increases the risk of lung cancer. Per year, 1900 lung cancer deaths are assumed to be due to radon!

BfS scientists have evaluated radon measurement data from 1992 to 2020 for the new map. Wherever granitic rocks with a higher uranium content are found, such as in the low mountain ranges of southern Germany, radon exposure is highest.
